    A life in brief

    Volodymyr Zelenskyy: life and timeline.

On the evening of 25 February 2022, with Russian troops closing on Kyiv and offers of evacuation on the table, Volodymyr Zelenskyy filmed himself on a dark street outside his office in an olive T-shirt: "We are here." Three years earlier he had been a comedian from the iron-ore city of Kryvyi Rih, the co-founder of Kvartal 95 and the star of Servant of the People, playing a teacher who accidentally becomes president. He won the real job with seventy-three per cent of the vote — then had to lead a country at war.

    1. 1978

      Born in Kryvyi Rih

Born 25 January into a Jewish family in the iron-mining city of Kryvyi Rih, Soviet Ukraine. His father, Oleksandr, is a professor of computer science; his mother, Rymma, an engineer. He spends about four early years in Erdenet, Mongolia, where his father works at a mine.

    2. 1995

      KVN

Joins the KVN comedy competition, hugely popular across the former Soviet Union, and becomes known for speed and physical comedy. He performs in its leagues until 2003, while also earning a law degree he never practises.

    3. 1997

      Kvartal 95

With friends from Kryvyi Rih, including Oleksandr Pikalov and the Shefir brothers, he forms a comedy team named after his home district. In 2003 it becomes the production company Kvartal 95 Studio, and he marries Olena Kiyashko.

    4. 2006

      Dancing with the Stars

Wins the first Ukrainian season of the dance competition. Kvartal's satirical show Vechirnii Kvartal makes him one of the country's best-known television figures; he also voices Paddington Bear in the Ukrainian dub of the films.

    5. 2015

      Servant of the People

Kvartal premieres the comedy series in which he plays Vasyl Holoborodko, a history teacher whose viral rant against corruption makes him president. A party with the show's name is registered in 2018.

    6. 2019

      Elected president

Having announced his candidacy on New Year's Eve on the 1+1 channel, he defeats Petro Poroshenko on 21 April with about 73 per cent — the largest landslide in Ukrainian presidential history. He is inaugurated on 20 May and meets Putin in Paris in December.

    7. 2021

      The Pandora Papers

Leaked records show he and his Kvartal 95 partners used offshore companies, some set up years before his presidency. He says he transferred his stake before taking office, but his approval ratings fall.

    8. 2022

      "We are here"

Russia launches its full-scale invasion on 24 February; he declares martial law and stays in Kyiv. He addresses parliaments including the House of Commons and the US Congress, and TIME names him and "the spirit of Ukraine" its Person of the Year.

    9. 2024

      Zaluzhnyi dismissed

In February he replaces the popular commander-in-chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi, later appointing him ambassador to the United Kingdom. His five-year term passes in May without an election, which martial law prevents.

    10. 2025

      Pressure at home and abroad

A televised Oval Office clash with Donald Trump and JD Vance in February is followed by street protests in July over a law curbing anti-corruption agencies, which he reverses. In November his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, resigns after anti-corruption investigators search his home.

    Major achievements

    Volodymyr Zelenskyy: major achievements.

    • 01

      Staying in Kyiv

His decision to remain in the capital as Russian forces advanced in February 2022, broadcast in handheld videos, helped hold the state together in the war's first days.

    • 02

      Rallying Western support

Speeches tailored to each audience — Churchill for the House of Commons, Martin Luther King Jr. for the US Congress — helped build the coalition supplying Ukraine with weapons and money.

    • 03

      A record landslide

His 2019 victory, with about 73 per cent in the runoff, was the largest in Ukrainian presidential history, won largely through social media rather than traditional campaigning.

    • 04

      Building Kvartal 95

From a student comedy team he and his friends built one of Ukraine's most successful production companies, writing, directing and starring in its shows.

    • 05

      Early reforms

His first years in office saw the High Anti-Corruption Court begin work, a politically difficult land reform and the expansion of state digital services through the Diia app.

    Turning points

    Volodymyr Zelenskyy: defining moments.

    • 31 December 2018

      From fiction to candidacy

After three seasons playing a president on television, he announced on New Year's Eve that he would run for the real office. His campaign leaned on YouTube, Instagram and Telegram and largely avoided traditional media. Critics called it thin on detail; voters exhausted by old elites did not care.

    • February 2022

      The decision not to leave

As the invasion began, Western governments offered to evacuate him. He stayed, and on the second night filmed himself outside the Presidential Office with his aides to prove the leadership was still in Kyiv. The video turned him into the public face of Ukraine's resistance.

    • 2022–2025

      Power under martial law

Wartime rule brought harder questions: the suspension of eleven political parties in March 2022, a unified television telethon, the dismissal of Zaluzhnyi and a series of corruption scandals around his inner circle. Supporters point to an existential war; critics warn about concentrated power.

We are here. Our soldiers are here. The citizens of our country are here. We are all here defending our independence, our state.

    What you’ll take away

    Lessons from Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s life.

    1. 01

Being seen is a form of leadership

A thirty-second phone video did what no communiqué could: it showed that Ukraine's government had not fled. His years in front of live audiences had taught him what an image can carry.

    2. 02

Preparation looks different from the inside

The discipline of KVN and the instincts of a television producer turned out to be training for wartime communication that no political career would have provided.

    3. 03

      Heroism does not end scrutiny

His wartime record sits alongside dismissed officials, offshore companies and scandals in his circle. Ukrainians have taken to the streets to defend anti-corruption agencies even while fighting a war.
