His father built middle-income rentals in Brooklyn and Queens. Donald Trump wanted Manhattan, and in 1971 he crossed the river to get it — turning a derelict hotel beside Grand Central into the Grand Hyatt, then putting his name in gold on Fifth Avenue. When the casinos collapsed into bankruptcy he sold the name instead of the buildings. Television made him a household boss. In 2016, with no political experience, he beat sixteen Republicans and then Hillary Clinton, while losing the popular vote by nearly three million.

Born 14 June to Fred and Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, the fourth of five children, and raised in Jamaica Estates. His father was already a successful builder of middle-income housing in Brooklyn and Queens.

Wharton
Graduates with a bachelor's degree in economics, after two years at Fordham and, before that, the New York Military Academy his parents sent him to at thirteen. He joins the family firm, Elizabeth Trump and Son, and receives student deferments from Vietnam-era service.

Crossing into Manhattan
Moves to Manhattan and secures the rights to the derelict Commodore Hotel near Grand Central. Using tax incentives, loans and partnerships he turns it into the Grand Hyatt New York, which opens in 1980 and establishes him as a serious player.

Trump Tower
A 58-storey tower on Fifth Avenue with a gold facade, serving as both his residence and his headquarters. It becomes a symbol of 1980s excess and of a developer who understood that the building and the brand were the same product.

The bankruptcies
The Trump Taj Mahal, once billed as the eighth wonder of the world, files for bankruptcy. Other properties follow. He negotiates with creditors and restructures, keeping control of much of the portfolio and cutting his personal liability.

The Apprentice
Becomes host and executive producer of the NBC reality show. It runs fifteen US seasons, he hosts the first fourteen, and it introduces him to millions who knew nothing of his business career — as a decisive boss who fires people.

Announcing at Trump Tower
Declares his candidacy in June with a speech whose remarks on immigration generate immediate controversy. Observers largely dismiss the campaign as a publicity stunt from a man with no political experience.

The upset
Beats sixteen primary rivals, takes the nomination in July over establishment objections, and wins on 8 November — losing the popular vote by nearly three million while carrying Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. The Electoral College finishes 304 to 227.
- 2017
45th President
Inaugurated 20 January on a platform of America First. His administration passes major tax reform cutting corporate rates, announces withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, and begins reshaping the courts. He governs substantially through Twitter.
- 2021
Leaving office
After refusing to concede the 2020 election and losing every legal challenge, a rally near the White House on 6 January is followed by supporters breaching the Capitol and disrupting certification. He is impeached a second time and acquitted by the Senate after leaving office on 20 January.

Convicted, then elected
In May a New York jury convicts him on 34 counts of falsifying business records in the hush money case, months after a major civil fraud judgment against him and his company. Appeals continue. He secures the Republican nomination and wins the general election.

Inaugurated 20 January — the second person after Grover Cleveland to serve non-consecutive terms as president.

Crossing the river

The debt comes due
Leverage had built everything, and leverage nearly ended it. The Taj Mahal went bankrupt, other properties followed, and his own finances were at risk. What he salvaged was the lesson: the asset with value was not the concrete, it was the name.

Becoming a character
The Apprentice reached millions who had never followed New York real estate and showed them a decisive, infallible boss. It was a portrait, and it was the one voters would remember thirteen years later. Celebrity turned out to be transferable to politics.

The stunt that wasn't
Everyone read the announcement as promotion. Instead his attacks on established politicians and political correctness found Americans who felt unheard, his rallies filled, and Twitter let him answer any story within minutes. He never left the centre of coverage.

Refusing to concede
He claimed without evidence that the election was stolen, and the courts rejected every challenge. On 6 January a crowd from his rally breached the Capitol mid-certification. He was impeached a second time, acquitted after leaving office, and kept his grip on the party.
